Quality of Health Care for Children and Adolescents: A Chartbook

Quality of Health Care for Children and Adolescents: A Chartbook

This chartbook is the first comprehensive national report on the quality of pediatric care. The researchers reviewed over 500 studies and synthesized this information into 40 charts that provide a portrait of the current state of pediatric health care.

The chartbook finds dramatic progress in some areas–such as reductions in hospital-acquired infections in pediatric intensive care units–and serious challenges in many others–such as gaps in preventive care and developmental services. It also identifies geographic, racial, and ethnic disparities in care for children across the United States and provides examples of quality improvement programs that have successfully improved care.

The chartbook presents information on:

  • The quality of children’s health care today
  • Defining quality of health care for children
  • Challenges and considerations in measuring quality of health care for children
  • A systems approach to improving quality of health care for children
  • Development process
  • The conceptual framework for reporting on quality of health care
  • Scientific issues and terminology

The charts contained within the chartbook address the following Institute of Medicine (IOM) domains and care needs:

  • Effectiveness
  • Patient safety
  • Access and timeliness
  • Patient and family centeredness
  • Disparities
  • Capacity to improve
