The Hookup is a statewide text messaging service in California that aims to provide youth with relevant and accurate sexual and reproductive health information and a convenient, confidential resource for accessing local clinics that offer free or low-cost sexual and reproductive health services.

Messages were developed by health educators based on issues identified in youth focus groups in high schools and teen clinics.

Topics include:

  • Sexually transmitted disease screening and prevention
  • Birth control and emergency contraception
  • Healthy relationships and communication skills
  • Substance abuse
  • Parental involvement
  • Cervical cancer prevention
  • Pregnancy options
  • Annual examinations
  • Confidentiality and consent issues
